OAU's Department of Dramatic Arts Takes the Stage by Storm with Electrifying Hamilton Performance

 


On June 19th, 2024, the Obafemi Awolowo University's Department of Dramatic Arts brought the electrifying energy of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton to life. The student performers delivered a powerful and vibrant interpretation of the American Founding Father's story, captivating the audience from the opening number.

The OAU production masterfully blended the original hip-hop score with Nigerian artistic influences. The audience was treated to a dynamic fusion of rap battles, soulful ballads, and energetic dance routines, all infused with a uniquely Nigerian flavor. The iconic "My Shot" number reportedly transformed into a pulsating display of contemporary Nigerian dance styles, leaving the crowd cheering.


Several scenes emerged as particular crowd-pleasers. The "Cabinet Battle #1" crackled with energy as the student actors embodied the fierce debates between Hamilton and Jefferson. The poignant "It's Quiet Uptown" resonated deeply, with the OAU's take emphasizing themes of loss and resilience that resonated with the Nigerian experience. The emotional impact of "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story?" was reportedly amplified through the students' powerful delivery.











The OAU's Department of Dramatic Arts successfully delivered a remarkable production of Hamilton.
